The Gambia
Since Peter’s first visit there in 1988, The Gambia has been one of our favourite birdwatching destinations. Although it is one of the continent’s smallest countries, it has an impressive avifauna and offers visitors an ideal introduction to the colourful world of African birds.
In some years we lead two-week tours, in others it's just one week.
On a two-week tour, the first week is spent in an excellent hotel on the Atlantic coast and from this base we visit some of the numerous birdwatching sites available nearby. These include the gallery forest of the famous Abuko Nature Reserve, the beach and coastal scrub woodland at Tanji and woodlands at Brufut, Pirang and Marakissa. We will almost certainly also visit the local sewage ponds and maybe the golf course! During the second week we head inland, following the mighty Gambia River to Tendaba Camp and staying in more basic accommodation. We then continue upriver to stay on Janjanbureh Island.
A one-week tour is also based at a hotel on the Atlantic. In addition to visiting some of the many local sites nearby, we take an excursion upiver, just as far as Tendaba Camp for a two-night stay.
On both tours we hope to see the beautiful Egyptian Plover, one of the numerous gems that make The Gambia an essential element of our tour programme.
